Beginners Course

Public Speaking for Kids

Theory and Practise

The beginners Public Speaking Course for Kids is a series of weekly workshops which equip children with the skills and knowledge to be able to deliver their message with impact.

Students are encouraged to talk about a topic they are passionate about, making the task easier while allowing their passion to shine. They build confidence in performing in public and in their ability to memorise and deliver a talk. Moreover, the sessions are fun and relaxed, so children feel safe to learn, experiment, express and enjoy the course.

Through games, activities and lessons, children will learn about, practise and develop:

  • Vocal tips, tricks and techniques and warm-ups

  • Body language basics

  • Reading an audience

  • Presentation techniques

  • Scriptwriting

  • Messaging through stories

  • Building confidence

  • Abdominal breathing

  • Managing nervousness

  • Body-brain feedback loop–triggering positive emotion and inner feelings of confidence through body and voice

  • First impressions

The beginner course sets the foundations, teaching simple concepts grounded in science.

No experience needed. Suitable for all abilities, including children who are introverted, shy, or those with anxiety, issues with confidence, etc. We provide an environment where they feel safe to learn and develop–even if they don’t want to speak in public. The knowledge and skills learned will be a valuable in other areas of their life, helping them to become better and more confident communicators.

Next Level Course

Public Speaking for Kids

Practise (Building on Beginner Level THEORY)

Next Level Public Speaking Course for Kids is designed for students who have already completed the beginner course, as we build on previously learned concepts.

This course is also suitable for children who need to build confidence quickly, as students get ample opportunities to speak in front of the group.

Children who are unable to attend the beginner course due to timing are also welcome to enrol.

These ongoing sessions provide an opportunity for students to put their skills into practise, with further learning, development and feedback.

We'll build on concepts previously learned, with activities and exercises designed to develop participants further.

A portion of the course will focus on improvisation. Students will have plenty of practise in standing up and talking about topics they select and topics randomly allocated to them to grow confidence in speaking off the cuff. For these short talks, students will have varied planning times to develop flexibility, and understanding of personal strengths and weaknesses in relation to time and effort. As always, we take small steps to develop confidence so that students feel like they are in a safe space.

This course also provides the opportunity for students to work together, creating a video production of a group talk, where they script, perform and edit the video as a group project.

Emphasis will be on practise, focusing on using the body and voice to communicate, engage and influence—life skills that are not limited to public speaking.

No pior experience needed.

These are mixed age/ability courses; each term, courses can vary in participants' age/ability. The content covered is the same taught to adults, presented in a format understandable for children aged seven and upwards. It applies to all ages/abilities. If your child/children will likely refuse to attend because they will be among younger children, please think twice before booking.

Mixed-aged courses are offered for multiple reasons, including:

  • Inclusivity

  • Courses form a relatively small component of my work; therefore, time limitations prevent offering additional courses.

  • Split-aged courses have not gathered enough (older) students to be sustainable, and trials have previously incurred financial loss.

  • Mixed-age learning develops tolerance, patience and emotional maturity, essential for emotional intelligence–a key topic of several of my courses/camps.

  • Students under 16 are not permitted to join adult courses.

Tyler seemed really enjoyed the course and said he learned a lot from it. He was really nervous before the final performance but he said it went well and was very happy about the result. He gained alot of confidence throughout the course which was excellent result!

De-stress before a talk. When tension disappears, delivery excels because emotion (fear) can overwhelm the brain, taking up valuable cognitive capacity.

Students feel safe enough to make mistakes in my classes, because that’s when learning flourishes. This eight-year-old had us all giggling :).

This eight-year-old shows that the simplest talk topic can be delivered with passion and emotion!

This talk from a fifteen-year-old was delivered beautifully; however, my camera failed during the performance, cutting the recording.

I expect participants to deliver from memory, without notes, because that’s when connection and engagement with the audience flourish–we talk to them instead of reading to them. Occasionally, commitments get in the way, and participants aren't ready to deliver without notes. This talk by a fourteen-year-old is delivered very well, despite still relying on notes.

Simply.. thankyou Sophie ! My daughter did the children’s confidence course followed by the public speaking course. Both worked on building her confidence which shows in my daughters life now. She became more confident in going to Tafe and is now working and is contributing to her work place with confidence. Thanks a million Sophie. I have recommended you to others :)

Sophie is a brilliant speaker coach and all round advisor for improving your ability to communicate effectively. I was lucky enough to be appointed Sophie to help me with my TEDx talk in 2018 and I honestly feel it wouldn’t have been as impactful and well received if it wasn’t for her guidance and advice. I would highly recommend Sophie to anyone considering her services!

Sophie has been absolutely amazing coach, who showed patience, style and firmness. She was able to guide me through the very involved process of writing and delivering a TED talk. I am very thankful for all the advice, techniques and understanding that I received from the very first time we met to the very last minute before going on stage. I could not recommend Sophie more as a speaking coach, especially for women who want to progress further in their public speaking and presentations.

Public Speaking Course for Kids Review
My four home-schooled children attended Sophie’s public speaking course last term and they loved it! Sophie is a wonderful teacher and her lovely, gentle approach was perfect or my ASD and dyslexic kids. They were always keen to go to class and happy to do the homework.

The whole course is presented in such a comfortable and flowing way that even my most reluctant writer was excited to sit down and do his homework. Having children of different ages, I was beyond happy with the skilful way Sophie was able to meet the children where they were at and tailor the coursework to their ability.

Along with speech writing, they learned how to calm their nerves, hold their bodies and how to use their hands. The confidence to speak in any setting is so important and this course has absolutely given them the confidence and also some very useful skills. So grateful to have found a wonderful teacher.
